h.NAOTO x SUGIZO Goth Night (11.02.11)

ИнтервьюNAOTO: I’m h.NAOTO’s designer, Hiroka NAOTO. Pleased to meet you. Thank you for gathering today.
Interviewer: It was a great collection.
NAOTO: Ah, thank you.
Interviewer: The whole event was quite amazing, but for the moment while we have you, the designer, here, could you tell us about the image for the collection?
NAOTO: Well the focus this time was collaborating with SUGIZO and while it was partially an experiment, it was about coordinating items. The collection itself is for Spring 2011, but this year is also the tenth anniversary for h.NAOTO.
Interviewer: Just in time!
NAOTO: Right, just in time! 2010 is our tenth anniversary so I wanted to mix up past permanent collections to make this the last collection of 2010.
Interviewer: Is that the whole story?
NAOTO: No. Well, the music was very powerful. Who would have thought that music was this… Yes. Powerful. More than the volume of the music, it’s the amazing way it jumps out “JAAA” which is very visual. And this time, collaborating with SUGIZO, with music and fashion, I wonder if h.NAOTO made the cut in terms of power but that’s what we aimed for.
Interviewer: Well done on this great collection. Wasn’t it wonderful? You’ve collaborated with various artists before in fashion shows but I think everyone is wondering if this collaboration with SUGIZO might not take off from here into various projects.-
NAOTO: SUGIZO and h.NAOTO have a bit of a history.
Interviewer: It seems like he visited the store sometimes.
NAOTO: Yes, and for example we met with X JAPAN in Yokohama etc., but particularly one on one like this, SUGIZO often said that my brand is very interesting and stands out on a world tour. So at the last minute, right at the end of the year we pulled together this emergency fashion show. SUGIZO just finished performing at Tokyo Dome and on New Years Eve he’s performing at a countdown so this was the only time available, but we were able to do it. I’m very grateful. Yesterday he even came for a proper rehearsal. I really am grateful.
Interviewer: It was very impressive. How lucky that this timing fit in!
NAOTO: Right. I thought there wouldn’t be anything more this year but it really became a special occasion to remember as the final h.NAOTO event of this year. Who would have thought I would be so busy right up to New Years but it left a strong impression.
Interviewer: Many people were lined up from very early on even at this busy time leading up to the new year. Thank you all. So on that note… Are you ready? It’d like to introduce the artist who gave such a wonderful performance for this collaboration with h.NAOTO, SUGIZO!
Interviewer: SUGIZO, thank you very much. How was it?
SUGIZO: It was embarrassing under such bright lighting. I’m not accustomed to performing in such a bright atmosphere. I don’t know if I’m meant to exist in such brilliance. No, it was really a lot of fun. Thank you very much.
Interviewer: You were very cool, right?
SUGIZO: Although it’s a bit cold.
Interviewer: It is, cold.
NAOTO: This space is tiny. As for the hair salon upstairs…
Interviewer: I went and apologized for that, just now!
NAOTO: They must have been wondering what the hell was going on down here.
SUGIZO: Probably, but it really felt great. I feel like NAOTO’s clothes, the tone of the show and SUGIZO music worked very well together. Right? I think that among this new collaboration, a new creativity could have been born. I’d like to continue next year.
Interviewer: Ohh? It was a great performance with great music, but about the music…
[SUGIZO makes a move for the mc’s mask]
SUGIZO: You should take this off.
Interviewer: Uh, no, that would be embarrassing.
SUGIZO: Ah, you seem to be the butch type.
Interviewer: You see, everyone wears masks at this event.
SUGIZO: Yes, and if you take your clothes off today there’d be a garter underneath, yes?
Interviewer: Yes. A garter.
SUGIZO: That seems right.
Interviewer: Wait, why are you asking that? Looks like I’ve been outted. So concerning today’s music, what kind of image did you have in mind, SUGIZO?
SUGIZO: Well I chose music that would fit with NAOTO’s show. Usually I really go for it when I perform, very out-going and exciting musically but in order for the clothes and atmosphere take a front seat, I think it’s best to tone down the music. In other words, even if it was the same music, I changed the arrangement and performance, creating the atmosphere through music so that the clothes and NAOTO’s style could be expressed.
Interviewer: It really gave me cold warts.
SUGIZO: Cold… warts? What’s that?
NAOTO: What’s that?
SUGIZO: Who says that? I’ve never heard of cold warts before. Are you people from kansai? [West Japan] Ah, I see.
Interviewer: Ah, so it’s goosebumps. I see.
SUGIZO: That’s the first time in my life I’ve ever heard of ‘cold warts’.
NAOTO: It’s kind of creepy, right? I don’t like it.
SUGIZO: I mean, it’s warts. Makes you think of breaking out in massive warts all over.
Interviewer: Well, what I was trying to say was… I got goosebumps.
SUGIZO: This year I’ve been very very busy. I haven’t had much chance to perform or record my own music. It’s the end of the year but I really wanted to perform SUGIZO music for my fanclub so I’m glad to have had this perfect opportunity. It was good, wasn’t it, everyone? In fact, I can’t remember ever performing so close before.
Interviewer: That’s right! Right before their eyes. This is normal for a fashion show, but…
SUGIZO: Right it is, but at this distance, they’d see if my nose ran.
Interviewer: Well if it did, they’d probably love it…
SUGIZO: That happens a lot during a live. But from the audience you definitely can’t see that sort of thing. I might even get a nose bleed so I was a bit worried about that, thinking I’d better keep cool.
Interviewer: Well, that wasn’t a problem. Today was truly a wonderful show and live. Taking this as a first experiment, it would be great to see future plans.
SUGIZO: I’d like to continue this collaboration.
NAOTO: Yes, me too. Heading into the new year it was still a very experimental phase but-
SUGIZO: This is was a showcase, so we wanted to see how it would work out. That’s why we wanted to test it out with the SUGIZO and h.NAOTO fan clubs with whom the impact would be greatest. If it went well, I think I’d like to try out a world tour with this.
Interviewer: Really?
NAOTO: A world tour.
Interviewer: A world tour?
SUGIZO: It was mentioned earlier, but I’ve often worn NAOTO’s clothes on overseas tours. The best reaction was the yukata style. No matter what country I went to, he has a great reputation. NAOTO’s clothes and my music do not reach their fullest in Japan, I think and I believe NAOTO agrees.
NAOTO: Yes. I’ve recently been to America and that’s how I felt.
SUGIZO: It really gives you a sense of freedom. I’d actually love to expand upon this collaboration with video and lighting and such elements to make for an interesting tour. Don’t you think so? Expressing the value of ‘goth’.
NAOTO: Well, there are all sorts of goth, but with the key word ‘gothic’ I’d like to try various things.
SUGIZO: Right. Goth and electro.
Interviewer: What a thing to look forward to, a world tour. I’d love to see that.
NAOTO: 2011.
Interviewer: 2011. Next year.
SUGIZO: I’ll have to make the time.
Interviewer: That’s right. And on that note, thank you very much for your time today. So, on the cusp of the new year, not just Japan but in fact aiming for a world tour, we hope that this ‘Goth Night’ will catch on. Please keep your eyes out for it from now on. Thank you very much. Lastly, let’s hear a last few words from NAOTO.
NAOTO: Thank you all for gathering here at the end of the year. This year we did many fashion shows, but we’ll keep up the fashion shows next year making lots of clothes. Together with SUGIZO we’ll be working towards making a new level of gothic expression so please support us next year, too. Happy new year, everyone.
Interviewer: Thank you. SUGIZO, could you also extend a message to the fans?-
SUGIZO: Thank you for your continued support this year. Lastly, finishing the year in this fashion felt great. I’ll be waiting in Kobe, changing back into Luna Sea mode. I think my brain’s getting a bit sloshy, but I’ll be going for it next year, too, so please support both h.NAOTO and SUGIZO. Thank you.
