вдруг наткнулась на ссылку с переводом на английский вступительной статьи в буклете к альбому X JAPAN "Art Of Life" (в лимитированном издании), написанной Наоши Тсуда.

'ART OF LIFE' LINER NOTE by Naoshi Tuda (translated in English)
I have translated 'ART OF LIFE' LINER NOTE by co-producer Naoshi Tuda (Sony Record).

It will be bit long. My translation might not good enough to explain beauty of words Naoshi Tuda used in Japanese.

I hope this will help all of 'ART OF LIFE' fans to understand this masterpiece more.

I remember the summer three years before.

In the studio room with Seekenser(NB:I don’t know what is it), synsesizer, Yoshiki and me. It has been two weeks. We were making song images and ideas.Unexpectedly, Yoshiki said ‘That’s it’ Total time was just less 30 minutes. I was wondering when Yoshiki would finish then suddenly finished the last part of his piano solo.

The studio was quiet. We dropped the light, listened just recorded sound loudly together. I felt so short even 30 minutes time has past. Both of us couldn’t speak.

I like to see how to create songs by talented artists. The connection with the artist and song is so deep. On the other hand, individually separated. ‘Do you think bit strange here? Shall I change this part?’ Yoshiki said simply. ‘Can’t you understand? I think perfect!’ he said proudly.

While recording, I enjoy watching Yoshiki’s building prosses those music datas. As usual, he had created perfect scores. Then Yoshiki played. He created complicated scores. Sometimes even Yoshiki was confused himself.

‘I can’t understand this strange melody. How come like this? I don’t think my score is wrong.’
We ignored. Just put sample sounds. Then arranged, listend again.

Wow. Great Yoshiki! It wasn’t wrong. This is great sound!’
‘You see, I was right!’ Then we continued.

I’m normally good at understand music tunes. Even like me, Yoshiki’s tunes were complicated. It made me dizzy. But I enjoyed the moment when those tunes turned out to be perfect.

I was speechless about Yoshiki’s piano solo. After recorded basic patern, Yoshiki said ‘I‘ll do improvisation.’ Then he concentrated himself. His face was same as normal but his created sounds were chaos. It was perfect.

It was utterly perfect, we decided to use that recorded one into ‘Art of Life’. The improvisation in the “Art of Life’ was exactly same one that Yoshiki played only once that summer.

I heard finished tape repeatedly. I don’t feel such a long 30 minetes. While listening, I never felt bored.

After that drums recording took 6 months, then Heath’s bass recording, Hide and Pata’s guitar recording, Toshi’s vocal recording took another 1year and half. Gradually, the song was shaping as a real song.

The big mind browing incident was happen to me while we were doing ochestra recording. Last October (NB:e1992) , at Abbey Road Studio, London. Yoshiki laughed at me that I was wearing mask on my face. I got cold that day. Enginer Rich was checking the sounds. Over the glass, 56 ochestra members and conductor Marx there.

When the recording started, I realised something strange feeling happen to me. I was checking score, same time listening ochestra sounds of ‘Art of Life’, I tried to understand that something strange feeling.

That strange feeling was like some mixed feeling such as sadness, pain, wonder about, despair, beauty…
I have been moved my feeling quite a lot when I heard very beautiful songs. But this was the first time the core of saddness hit me. Yoshiki’s messages hit me deep inside.

Like a patiant is fighting his illness alone in his hospital bed, like deep, going back memories, struggle, panic, fear,still expect for love, confusion…

I didn’t realise how much Yoshiki has skilled up to show his feeling into his creation. I was stunned. I nearly choked.

It is over my imagination. The ‘Art of Life’ is emerged more biggar scale than I have imagine.

After this incident, ‘Art of Life’ is something really defferent piece for me, compare with ‘Endless Rain’,’Silent Jealousy’.Those were I could understand since Yoshiki created until finished off. But ‘Art of Life’ is defferent. Yoshiki has stepped up where I couldn’t reach any more.

Yoshiki’s attitude toward his songs has changed to ‘give birth’ rather ‘create’ by this time.

Why give birth? For who? What am I? Because Yoshiki was always facing those questions and pains.That why he could create such a heart felt songs.

‘I just made good song’
I love to hear this phrase from Yoshiki.

The start of ‘Art of Life’ was same as that.
‘Hey, Mr Tuda. I am going to make 30 minutes long song. Could you listen for me?’
That was in spring 1990.

А вот что нашла я на тему интервью и выпуска концертного ДВД "Art of Life" (мини-концерт проходил в Токио Доме 1993.12.31, а видео было выпущено Йошики в 2003м) буквально несколько дней назад.
Интервью с Йошики, приуроченное к выпуску ДВД, где он рассказывает и о песне и о её записи, называется

"Смерть - обычная вещь."

Although "pain" is something of the past, it will never really fade. In the past issue, we talked about the release of the Art of Life DVD. This time, we bring you a telephone-interview with Yoshiki-san, ex-drummer and leader of X Japan about the Art of Life DVD, film gigs, the LAST LIVE, and hide-san. Although everything is of the past, the feeling remains the same.

>>>This time, you didn't watched the DVD that was released, right? Don't you want to watch it?
Yoshiki: I didn't bring it with me (I think he's in LA right now-D.T.), the DVD system in Japan is different from here, so I can't watch it.

>>>About the history of the song, Art of Life, when you decided to write it, it was pretty sudden right?
Yoshiki: I have always wanted to write a complicated song that lasted 30 minutes. But I've always thought that there was no way I could play it live. However, in the end, we decided to play it live at Tokyo Dome but we stil hadn't thought of how to do it. I had to talk to hide about the concert and concluded that we would definitely play it live. When I told the other band members about this they all made a woeful face and it was obvious that they did not like the plan one bit. I understood that because the song is hard to play and it is very very long. Actually, I thought that we would play the song in the middle of a concert but in the end, just playing Art of Life alone tired us out very much.

>>>The rehearsal must've been very hard.
Yoshiki: We were all very busy, and practiced very hard.

>>>The real rehearal must've been even worse.
Yoshiki: No one barely moved. Usually in an X live we would be very lively, but this time everyone was completely still *laughs* It was the first time that at the beginning of a song, everyone was quiet and serious. But after it was over, everyone's expression changed to "relief." They were all very happy to have finished. In the real rehearsal, the guitar lines were perfect, TOSHI's singing was so great as if there was nothing he couldn't do. I remember when we played Art of Life, I was very happy. Even if everyone didn't want to play one long song, they played it anyways. I don't know why was that. *laughs*

>>>The live must've been very strenuous.
Yoshiki: If you don't listen to the song often, you probably won't understand why it was that way. But if you listen to it many times, you would think that it was a weird song with many odd mistakes. You'd ask yourself, "huh? isn't this part kind of weird?" I tried to fix those problems 3 times, and completely rewrote the song another 3 times, but the reactions were still the same. Because what was weird was just this one note. I think that everyone was very tense on the day of the live.

>>>The singing for this song is also high.
Yoshiki: Yes, it is. In the other X songs, TOSHI would usually be the one to arrange the singing himself. Therefore, he would be able to change the key to make it lower or higher for himself. But because there was an orchestra in this song, it wasn't as easy to change the keys. It was especially hard for TOSHI to sing it live, because it actually took 8 months to record the song on to CD. I remember that TOSHI had long hair back then. When I watched him in the DVD, I thought "Hey...That's TOSHI." Everyone else's hair was also long.

>>>Back then you were very slender and wore red lipstick.
Yoshiki: The red lipstick has meaning, you know.

>>>Eh? Really?
Yoshiki: Yes! It means death.

>>>Then this song must be very important to you.
Yoshiki: For me...I think it's over.

>>>The CD cover for this song, half of it is your face.
Yoshiki: It'd be easier if you looked at the back of it. The mood I had when I was writing the song was the desire to die. Therefore, the lyrics was that of a person who wanted to die, it only talks about death, it talks about committing suicide unsuccessfully.

>>>But in the end, (in the song), you couldn't kill youself because you "wanna live."
Yoshiki: That was the feeling deep in my heart that I wanted to express.

>>>Why did you choose to write that type of song?
Yoshiki: Because when everyone listens to it, they'll know right away that Art of Life is an X song. In reality, all of X songs has something to do with death.

>>>You never felt depressed writing it?
Yoshiki: The lyrics in my new project, VIOLET UK, are even worse.

>>>Are they in English?
Yoshiki: I feel that when I write in English, it can be more straightforward. Therefore, all my songs are in English.

>>>So, in conclusion, it took you about 3 years to finish Art of life right?
Yoshiki: That time, we moved companies - from SONY to Atlandtic so it was a very hectic time.

>>>But no matter what, all your memories remained in your head right? (uh..this is a weird question -D.T.)
Yoshiki: My feelings now? Even if I'm working on X, even if I release a DVD, all that's in my head is really about VIOLET UK.

>>>Hm...and how about the guitar lines? For the guitar solos, you decided who would play which part right?
Yoshiki: It was like that for Art of Life. Because that was how hide worked.

>>>You can really tell that it's a guitar solo of X.
Yoshiki: hide put all his effort into it.

>>>The melody and the base line is all X.
Yoshiki: Yes.

>>>Can you say that this was the peak of X's greatness?
Yoshiki: This song, for X Japan, has the same feeling of when we released our first CD.

>>>How did you feel when you went into the recording booth?
Yoshiki: I thought that I would put in all my effort, and would produce to the best of my abilities. Because since the album, VANISHING VISION (indies album released in 1988), I gave it all my effort. But I was never as tired as when we recorded Art of Life. I had to take care of everything so when I was the producer there was nothing special that I wanted to do. I actually wanted someone else to do it, but I never found anyone to my liking. So in the end, I took care of everything until it was done.

>>>Because one who understands rock, classic, and orchestra is very rare to find, right?
Yoshiki: X is a band that does classical music, but because it's kind of a weird band it's very hard to find a balance.

>>>Therefore you like to do lives better?
Yoshiki: I like lives because it's X.

>>>You've become so good at English, are you still taking lessons?
Yoshiki: Oh yes, I still take many lessons because I don't want to have any regrets *laughs* I want to learn as much as possible.

>>>Finally, what kind of work are you doing at the moment?
Yoshiki: Right now the DVD classic concert is finished, and it's being remixed right now. I intend to do an orchestra version too. I want to make Eternal Melody II because I want to surprise everyone. When the time comes, you'll understand when you listen to it.

Я немного запуталась, разве 31.12.1993г.был мини-концерт?
По-моему 30 и 31 были обычные полные концерты, я сейчас не могу вспомнить точно..

да, ты права, 30-31.12.1993 было 2 полноценных концерта в Токио Доме, которые в 2008м вышли на ДВД в виде X JAPAN Returns.
Хмм.... на обложке видео ART OF LIFE написано, что концерт тоже проходил 31-ого. Блин, сколько смотрела и Returns, и Art of Life, ни разу не задумывалась, что это один и тот же концерт +_+

I did it!

Я помню лето три года назад.
В студии Seekenser(как и переводчик с японского, я тоже не знаю, что это), синтезатор, Йошики и я. И так продолжалось уже две недели. Мы работали над образами и идеями песни. Неожиданно Йошики сказал: «Вот и всё». В общем песня длилась чуть менее 30-ти минут. Мне было интересно, когда же Йошики закончит, и вдруг он закончил последнюю часть своего фортепианного соло.
В студии было тихо. Мы приглушили свет и вместе слушали только что записанную музыку. Песня показалась мне такой короткой, хотя на самом деле прошли 30 минут. Мы оба не могли говорить.
Я люблю наблюдать за тем, как талантливые артисты создают песни. Связь с артистом и песней такая глубокая. Но с другой стороны, они индивидуальны. «Как ты думаешь, здесь звучит немного странно? Мне изменить эту часть?» Йошики говорил просто. «Неужели ты не понимаешь? Мне кажется, это превосходно!» - сказал он гордо.
Пока шла запись, мне доставляло большое удовольствие просто наблюдать за процессом создания той музыки. Как обычно, Йошики написал превосходные партитуры. А потом он играл. Он написал сложные партитуры. Иногда Йошики и сам в них путался.
«Не могу понять эту мелодию. Как же так? Не думаю, что моя партитура записана неверно.»
Мы не обращали внимания. Просто брали музыкальный образец, делали аранжировку и слушали его снова.
«Вау. Это здорово, Йошики! Партитура не была неверной! Это превосходно звучит!»
«Вот видите, я был прав!» И мы продолжали.
Вообще-то я неплохо разбираюсь в музыкальных мелодиях. Но даже для меня мелодии Йошики были сложны. От них голова шла кругом. Но я наслаждался моментами, когда эти мелодии вдруг оказывались превосходными.
Я был поражён фортепианным соло Йошики. После записи основной партии соло Йошики сказал: «Я буду импровизировать». И он ушёл в себя. Его лицо было таким же, как и обычно, но звук, который он создавал, напоминал хаос. Это было превосходно.
Это было изумительно, мы решили использовать эту запись в “Art of life”. Импровизация в “Art of life” и есть та самая, которую Йошики играл лишь однажды тем летом.
Я неоднократно переслушивал готовую запись. 30 минут не казались мне долгими. Когда я слушал эту песню, мне никогда не становилось скучно.
После записи ударных, продолжавшейся 6 месяцев, были записи баса Хиса, гитар Паты и Хидэ, вокала Тоши, которые заняли ещё полтора года. Постепенно песня начала обретать реальную форму.
Невероятный инцидент случился со мной, когда мы записывали оркестр. В прошлом октябре (1992-го года), в Abbey Road Studio, в Лондоне. Йошики смеялся надо мной, потому что я носил маску на лице. Я простудился в тот день. Инжинер Рич проверял звук. За стеклом были 56 участников оркестра и дирижёр Маркс.
Когда мы начали запись, я понял, что у меня появилось какое-то странное чувство. Я просмотрел партитуру, в то же время слушая, как оркестр играл «Art of life». Я пытался понять, что же это за странное чувство.
Странное чувство было будто бы смесью таких чувств, как печаль, удивление, желание получить ответ, отчаяние, красота…..
Я и раньше испытывал множество чувств, когда слушал очень красивые песни. Но это было впервые, чтобы печаль поразила меня в самое сердце. Послание Йошики глубоко проникло в мою душу.
Как будто пациент борется с болезнью в одиночку, лёжа в больничной койке, так глубоко, возвращаясь к воспоминаниям; борьба, паника, страх, и всё ещё ожидание любви, сомнения……
Я не понимал, сколько мастерства требуется Йошики, чтобы выражать свои чувства в творчестве. Я был ошеломлён. Я чуть не перестал дышать.
Это было за гранью моего воображения. “Art of life” оказалась намного более масштабной, чем я мог себе представить.
После этого инцидента, “Art of life” стала для меня чем-то отличным от “Endless rain”, “Silent Jealousy”. Те песни были понятны мне на протяжении всего процесса их создания. Но “Art of life” была другой. Йошики активизировался там, где я не мог ничего больше достичь.
К тому времени отношение Йошики к песне сменилось с «дать рождение» на «создать».
Зачем рождаться? Для кого? Кто я? Йошики всегда сталкивался с этими вопросами и болью. Поэтому он смог создать такую трогающую сердце песню.
«Я просто пишу хорошую музыку».
Я любил слышать от Йошики эту фразу.
Начало “Art of life” было похожим.
«Эй, Тсуда-сан, я собираюсь написать песню длиной 30 минут. Не послушаете меня?»
Это было весной 1990-го.
