ロサンゼルス現地時間2016年2月3日（以下同現地時間）、2016年米サウス・バイ・サウスウェストフェスティバル(以下SXSW)映画祭の各部門候補作品が発表され、X JAPANのドキュメンタリー映画’We Are X’が24ビーツ・パー・セカンド(24 Bests Per Second)にノミネートされたことが発表された。この部門は、ドキュメンタリースタイルを軸に置いた、特定の音楽ジャンルやミュージシャンのサウンド・文化・影響力をショーケースする作品を対象とする。
SXSW とは、1987年に音楽からスタートし、94年には世界に先駆けて映画、インターネットとデジタルのコミュティを取り込み、今では世界各国から業界屈指のアーティスト・関係者が集結する世界最大のクリエイティブ・ビジネス・フェスティバルへと成長。その規模は年々拡大し続けており、今日来場者は10日間でのべ10万人、約380億円の経済効果をもたらしている。
‘We Are X’は1/23に米サンダンス映画祭でプレミアされ、数日前に同映画祭の最優秀編集賞を受賞したばかり。米サンダンス映画祭と米SXSWフェスティバルにノミネートされたドキュメンタリー映画は’We Are X’のみという世界的なW快挙なだけに、X JAPANは日本人アーティストとして今後世界的に名前を轟かせると期待されている。1月22日にはX JAPANのリーダーYOSHIKIがサンダンス映画祭史上初となるオフィシャルオープニングイベントにてピアノ演奏を披露、 世界中の業界人・メディアが注目する中パフォーマンスし、スタンディングオベーションになるなど大絶賛の嵐を受けた。また、同映画祭で’一番多くツイートされたドキュメンタリー’として話題をさらった。
さらに2月3日発売のロサンゼルス・タイム スでは‘We Are X’を大々的にフィーチャー、今後さらに”西と東の壁を破っていくだろう”と X JAPANに期待を寄せている。
日本時間2月2日にPATAの急病が明らかとなり、Wembley公演が延期されることが発表されたX JAPAN。リーダーのYOSHIKIは、
「PATAの悲しいニュースに落ち込んでいるときに、信じられないようなニュースが次々と舞い込んで何が現実なのかよく分からない自分がいて、地獄と天国を味わっているような気持ちです。 」
と複雑な気持ちを語った。
’WE ARE X’は日本が誇る伝説的ロックバンドの進化、前代未聞の歴史、そしてさらなる成功が約束された彼らの未来を追求するハリウッドのドキュメンタリー映画。X JAPANの偉業と世界各国でのソールドアウトツアーを中心に、不屈の精神を持ったバンドの勝利と悲劇の軌跡を追う。製作は、Searching For Sugar Man (邦題: シュガーマン 奇跡に愛された男でアカデミー賞を受賞したプロデューサー、ジョン・バトセックと、優れたミュージックドキュメンタリー作品を生み出してきた スティーブン・キジャック(主な作品にStones In Exile [邦題:ローリングストーンズ ストーンズ・イン・エクザイル〜「メインストリートのならず者」の真実]、スコット・ウォーカー -30 Century Man-[デビッド・ボウイプロデュース]、Backstreet Boys: Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of などがあるが担当した。
”We Are X”の快進撃はさらに爆進を続ける。

South By Southwest on Tuesday announced a festival lineup rich in documentaries.
Among the nonfiction films on the schedule is the world premiere of TOWER, directed by Keith Maitland, an examination of the devastating school shooting which took place on the University of Texas campus in Austin in 1966.
"Combining archival footage with rotoscopic animation in a dynamic, never-before-seen way, TOWER reveals the action-packed untold stories of the witnesses, heroes and survivors of America’s first mass school shooting, when the worst in one man brought out the best in so many others," SXSW said in its online catalogue.

Another disturbing news event is the basis for the documentary Beware the Slenderman, directed by Irene Taylor Brodsky. It explores the tale of a pair of 12-year-old girls who were inspired by a mysterious internet boogeyman, "Slenderman," to plot the murder of a friend.

SXSW will play host to the world premiere of Joe Berlinger's latest documentary, Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru. The festival says the film "captures internationally renowned life and business strategist and best-selling author, Tony Robbins, in a revelatory cinéma vérité film that goes behind the scenes of his mega once-a-year seminar 'Date With Destiny.'"
