Japanese Music Superstar Yoshiki To Compose Theme For 2012 Golden Globes Awards
Yoshiki
Japanese Music Superstar
Aida Takla-O’Reilly
President, HFPA
SOUNDBITE 1:
Aida: "Well, I first met him in a get together, and I sat next to him and we talked, and somebody was saying to Yoshiki 'Oh, you did write the theme for the Emperor and the Exposition.' And I said 'Oh, you did?' And I said 'Why don't you write it for the Hollywood Foreign Press?' And he said, 'I'd be delighted.'"
Yoshiki: "I was delighted."
Aida: "And that was the beginning of history."
SOUNDBITE 2:
Yoshiki: "It's such an honor, I mean, I actually cannot believe it. When I was writing the song, I was like 'Gosh, I am writing the song for the Golden Globes. Wow.' Everyday I wake up and I am writing the song for the Golden Globes. It is such an honor."
SOUNDBITE 3:
Aida: "Well, you know, Yoshiki is so talented and very diverse, and we had a meeting with Stan Lee at Comic Con and he was talking about Yoshiki and he said: 'He's a rockstar, he knows classic music, he knows everything.' So I said, 'Let me see his tape. I'd like to see his tape.' And it was so impressive. I thought that this would enhance our Golden Globes, it would add something new, something fresh with international people. He's a rockstar from Japan, and it would be delightful for us at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association as producers of the Golden Globes."
SOUNDBITE 4:
Yoshiki: "Well, it's beautiful, but still catchy. So the melody is kind of addictive, so you are going to remember the melody."
Aida: "That describes it. You hear it a couple of times and it will be going around in your mind. I love it."
SOUNDBITE 5:
Aida: "We had a song a long time ago that a big singer would come at the beginning, but it was geared to naming the nominees. So it was different every time. But I don't believe we had a theme song as this one, which when people hear it, they'll say 'Oh, the Hollywood Foreign Press,' or 'Oh, the Golden Globes.' We are going to use it a lot, and as it is being used, it will identify us. It is a branding."
SOUNDBITE 6:
Aida: "Yoshiki's theme will be the signature piece of the show. It will be at the opening and it will reoccur during the show. And we will probably use it also during our other events."
SOUNDBITE 7:
Yoshiki: "Yes, I am a rockstar, but also I create classical music, too. Again, it is such an honor for the HFPA to recognize the range of music that I do. Also, I am from Japan... HFPA are people from throughout the world, more international. The HFPA gave an international artist like me an opportunity to do one of the most prestigious shows in America."
SOUNDBITE 8:
Aida: "This thought was never in my mind, to make a theme for the Golden Globes, but when I met him the thought came to my mind, so it was him who created the show in my brain. Then I asked him. We were not looking for somebody. He brought it to home just by being who he is."

SOUNDBITE 9:
Barry: "I was very excited when I heard the theme for the first time because it had a lot of elements that we were looking for. It captures the elegance of Hollywood, which is what the Golden Globes is all about, and it also has what Yoshiki can do so well, which is give it that little edge, because he is also a rock musician. So to have that kind of dual talent going for you really makes it an impressive work."
Yoshiki: "I really enjoyed the process. When I create rock music for my band, I am always the boss. So I just create whatever I want. But this is such a challenge, at the same time, I learned a lot about the tempo for TV shows. Also, the Golden Globes is such a prestigious event. At the same time, it has some kind of party vibe. I was there last year. I would like to add some edge to it. I've really enjoyed the whole process doing this."
